CV embellisher banned for a year

A Dentist who lied about his clinical experience on his CV has been banned from practising for a year.

The Dentist, of North Oxford, gave a presentation on oral surgery to an audience full of postgraduates and oral surgeons at the Thames Four Pillars Hotel in Sandford-on-Thames, but the delegates became suspicious about the contents of his CV and speech, the General Dental Council heard.

He claimed he was a registrar at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, and had carried out almost 200 operations after 4 years training. This surprised 3 oral surgeons from the hospital who knew the Dentist had worked there for just 10 months.

The GDC found he had designed the CV to misrepresent his true position and mislead those who attended the lecture.

Chairman Jason Leitch said: ‘Your long history of exaggeration and deception has brought the profession into disrepute, giving other professionals and potentially patients a misleading impression of your qualifications and experience.

‘Taking into account all aspects of your conduct and the circumstances in this case, the committee finds you guilty of serious professional misconduct.’

The Dentist denied any wrongdoing and claimed his exaggerated experience listed on his CV was a clerical error. The panel decided not to strike off the Dentist due his glowing testimonials and the lack of any criticism of his clinical expertise.

We recently conducted research to find out who lies on their CV and what the most common lies were. For more information, visit our ‘have you ever lied on your CV?‘ post.
