Would You Transfer To Another State?

If you had a good paying job would you agree to relocate to another state if you were asked to do it? My friend had this happen to him. He lived in New York and our company asked him to transfer to the San Francisco office. After much consideration and I think the company was really pushing him to do it, he agreed.

He stayed at the San Francisco office for three years until our company started downsizing and he was fired.

My friend was pretty angry and upset that he pulled up stakes to move 3,000 miles away just to be let go two years later.

He ended up moving to Los Angeles where he found another job.

Would you agree to transfer when something like this might happen?

  2. I wouldn't mind transferring for a good job. We relocated to Denver, CO from WA state for my husband's job but we hated it there so we came home. He still works for the same company. He commuted to Denver for about a year then got a transfer to Portland, OR.

I would be afraid to uproot my life and move to a strange city solely for a job. If things didn't work out, being stuck in a strange place would be a lot to overcome.

I just don' t think it would be worth the risk. If the work was basically paperwork, I would request I telecommuting instead.

The city that I live in I have grew up here. It would take a lot for me to transfer to a different city or state. The circumstances would have to be right.

  5. My husband and I never wanted to transfer to another state, or even to another city. Most of our relatives live in Missouri and we enjoy seeing them on a regular basis. There have been times though when we thought getting as far away from all of them as possible might be a good thing. :p

One consideration that many people don't think about, is how the laws may differ between where you currently live and where you would live once transferred. The social atmosphere would be crucial as well.

I have always lived in Denver, which is pretty relaxed, but I would never move to the south because of the heavy religious atmosphere. They don't call it the bible belt without reason, you know.
