Does bring home work from the office make you a better employee or a worse employee if you don't? A friend of mine works in an office and she has been bringing work home with her a lot lately. She is tired in the morning from staying up late or she will stay late at the office.

I had a job where I started at 7:00 AM, stayed until 9:00 PM and brought work during the weekends. My life was all work. I was tired all the time.

I was younger then but if I had a job like that now I would either work all those long hours and not bring work home or I would work less hours and bring work home.

Either way I would be showing the company that I was a "team player." I hate that term!

I don't think anyone should bring work home from a job, especially if the employer doesn't allow you to work at home on a daily basis. The home needs to be your time away from the employers demands.

If you are getting an hourly wage and take work home, in most cases you are working for free during your evenings and weekends. Of course, the employer will love this and feel you are a great employee, but it rarely translates into tangible or useful recognition, like more pay!

No. I think your mind needs a break. But with some projects it can be impossible to focus with the interruptions of the office.

If it is impossible to focus on projects in the office, it's time to talk to the supervisor or team leader about fixing the problem. Letting the project invade your home isn't solving any problem at the office.

I am a firm believer that the solutions to problems in the workplace are at the workplace. If things can't be arranged to prevent interruptions there, then the project simply won't be finished as if those interruptions didn't exist.

I've always avoided taking work home unless absolutely necessary. I'm a better, more productive employee when I'm able to separate my home life from my work life.

People work better when they have had a break from it.

They also work better when they can pursue their own interests when not at work. Taking work home keeps you from pursuing your personal goals!
