Temporary Job Agencies

    Sometimes when you can't find a full time position the best thing to do is to find a temporary job.

    I've gone to temporary agencies and find that most times they are worthless. If they do find a job for me they pressure me to go to the temporary agency at 5:00 PM to fill out their forms. Sorry, I live a good hour out of Manhattan and will not start traveling at 5:00 PM and maybe get back home at 8:00 PM just to fill out their forms. I usually explain that to them and go to the agency early the next morning.

    I have gotten a few good jobs from a temp agency but mostly I don't get anything. I call them when my assignment is finished and they say they will look for something else for me. Usually I end up calling them twice a week just to hear that they don't have anything.

    Jobs are scarce these days but I'm starting to think that any job placement agency is a waste of time and money.

    What do you think?

    I've never used a temp agency, but I have several friends who have found full-time jobs through them. They will complete a job for a company, and then that company will offer to hire them.

    Where I used to work my job would let a temp go and hire them for a full time position. But eventually they just kept the temps on as a temp for months and months, even as long as a year.

    I thought that temp agency's can find jobs for almost anyone who signs up with them but I've learned that they don't have anywhere as many jobs as they advertise. People here in NYC are really scrambling.
