Telecommuting

I think that it would be good for the government to require all companies to allow employees the option of telecommuting, where possible. In fact, with the gasoline issues that have developed, it should become law within the next 5 years.

This requires some discipline , but not as much as people think. After all, if you want to eat, you will complete those tasks necessary to keep your job!

Would you be comfortable telecommuting instead of physically showing up at an office?

What drawbacks do you envision if over 1/3 of the work force could work from their homes?

  2. My daughter is able to telecommute a little with her job. As a single mom it's really necessary at times. I think with the high cost of gas and the high cost of child care, telecommuting would be a good option, especially for women with children. One drawback for employers would be not knowing how much work your employees are actually doing on a given day.

I agree, this would be great. Most people would rather work from home, I know I do.

I worked for a big online site with people living all over the US. If we all had to discuss something the company would have the meeting over the phone. Sometimes more than 50 of us attended a meeting this way and it worked out fine.

Allowing people to work from home if possible would be great for a company.

This would be simple to remedy. Employees would either log their work in or be connected to the company's computer as part of the company's network.

IF there are concerns about viruses creping in from the internet, the company could provide a laptop, dedicated for work only.
