How Soon Can You Ask

How soon is too soon to ask about how much a job pays? I don't want to ask too soon, but I want to know before I walk out of the office.

Should I ask right away or wait till they ask me if I have any questions?

If it's a regular full-time job, I'd wait until they make an offer. However, the last few jobs I've had they've come right out and said the pay before the interview. I think that helps people not waste time.

If it's freelance, always discuss rates at the beginning.

  3. Yes, MerdeCat is correct - only ask about your salary later on in the application process.

I think it's not a good impression to ask for the monthly wages during application process. The Boss may think that you're only after for the salary. I'll prefer to wait them tell me how much I will earn. Patience is always a virtue.

I think remuneration issues should be last. Asking in the process of the interview may make the potential boss view you as 'money' rather than 'work' minded person. However i feel it is important for all issues regarding salary/wages to be properly addressed before i leave the interview that is in case the interview was not just for shortlisting candidates.

Oh dear. Maybe this is where I've been going wrong. I've been asking about salary during the interview process. My logic was that I'd want to know what kind of remuneration I'm going to get for my time. I thought it would be best not to get any nasty surprises after the offer arrived with a much lower figure than I'd been thinking.

    I guess I was wrong

Ok, that makes it a little harder though. If I am waiting for job offers from more than one company, money does come into play-- even though there are other factors there that help me make a decision.

If I know what is being offered upfront then that helps me pick a place quicker. But, I do agree that you should wait to ask, which is why I asked.

It's better to wait for them to offer first. You may want to know before you leave but you may ruin your chances of getting the job since you look more interested in the pay then the actual job itself....which by the way is usually what we care about anyway but it's not the impression you want to leave if you're wanting the job.

I would ask at the interview. It's an important piece of information to have. Don't be afraid to ask.

If the interviewer doesn't want to tell you then they should at least give you a figure that might be around what the job pays.

When you interview for a job remember you are interviewing them too. You want to work for a place that tells you want you need to know. Salary is important.

So... why is it wrong to be interested in the pay? Isn't that why we want jobs in the first place? We don't go there for the love of it. We are paid for our effort and we want to know how much the company thinks we're worth!
