Do You Care About The Area You Work In?

When I apply for a job I always take into consideration just where the job is located. I want to know if the area is safe in case I have to work overtime and leave the office late.

I also make sure that I know where all the subway trains are and which subway lines get me there. Also because I like to know where I am and the fastest route to get there and home again.

Would I turn down a job if the area was unsafe? Well, that depends on how unsafe it was. If a subway line was nearby and I didn't have to walk too far then I wouldn't. But if it were in a bad area and a long walk to any subway then I would turn it down.

I also like to know how far I have to walk just in case we get a lot of snow. I hate walking in the snow. :)

I applied for a job that is in the city (which I DON'T want) but I know they have offices out of the city (which I DO want). I asked at the interview and he said there's a chance I could get the outer city one because I was open about it.

It's great when the company you want to work for also has offices that are in a better location for you.

One company I worked with had it's main office in Manhattan and another one on Long Island. Many people interviewed at the Manhattan office and transferred to the Long Island one because it was closer to their home.

It's wonderful if a company can help out their employees like that.

It depends really. If I found the area depressing, I'd turn it down. You want to be able to go out at lunch. But, if it's just an area that maybe you'd want to avoid being a long at night, I've done that. No big deal.

  5. You've gotta work where you feel comfortable. If you're uncomfortable, your clients will be able to tell.

I try to keep my employment within 20 minutes of my home, by side streets. I refuse to drive on the highway as part of my daily commute!

I always keep my employment within a 15-20 minutes of my home. Sometimes I even try and keep it in the bus route of my area. The job that I have now is about 10 minutes away which is good the way that gas prices are going up.

  8. When I first started working for Civil Service years ago, I had to commute 30 miles to get to work. It wasn't bad but I much prefer working close to home. These days with gas prices so high it's an even better idea to work nearby.
