Discrimination

Have you ever been discriminated against and didn't get the job because of that? I know I have.

Some companies won't hire you because of age, which is my problem now. Sometimes you won't get the job if you're too heavy, too thin, have a beard, you're the wrong color, and a million other things. Of course the company will deny this but it happens and it happens all the time.

Has this happened to you and what if anything did you do about it?

  2. Hi skatss - this is a good discussion topic and would love to hear from people regarding this as it's something we're about to write about in our blog.

I can't wait to read the blog when the article is written. I think it's a big problem that many people face. I have faced it many times myself.

Just because someone is a little older or looks different from the "norm" doesn't mean that they can't do the job.

I am disabled on my right side from a stroke that I had when I was a kid. Some interviews that I have gone to over the years the interviewer looks at me and I pretty much know what they are thinking. That I cannot do the job because I am disabled even though I am qualified for the job.

jenbear, that is so wrong. I wish I knew what to do to get employers to understand that just because someone looks different does not mean that they cannot get the job done. I'm sure they miss out on a lot of good workers.

Most people over 40 experience discrimination. Companies do things to push the over 40 employee out to avoid paying retirement benefits or the higher wage that has been earned through years of work.

I think it's difficult to prove discrimination. An employer may have totally different reasons for not hiring you than you imagine. However, sometimes it's easy to see it on someone's face...

The key is to look at how the employer benefits by not having the over 40 worker on their payroll and not just taking their word for reasons regarding their actions.
