Where do you look to find jobs that you can apply for an interview? Newspapers are a big source but does anyone us any online sources? I've had some interviews that friends have set up for me at their job and these always worked out well. I usually got the job.

But if you don't have a friend working at a company that needs more help where is the best place to go? Newspapers, Craiglist, other online sources?

Unfortunately, I think having an inside track with a friend is the best way to get a job.
Craigslist always has a lot of postings, even though you have to wade through a lot of garbage. The newspaper is probably a good source also. I've never had any luck with the big internet sites like Monster.com

Don't forget about the phone book! I've gotten jobs just by calling to see if there are openings.

I got the job I'm in now from a local job-seeker's website listing. I applied, went for the interview, got some professional help preparing a CV and ... got the job.

I've been promoted since then just two months ago and the application and interview process was entirely internal only - they didn't advertise the position outside the company.

I never thought of going to the phone book and just kind of cold calling places. Does that actually work? You have to somewhat brave to try that but it really is a good idea.

My boyfriend did that went through the phone book and started calling places to see if they were hiring . On his third call he found a company that was hiring and was with them for 3 years.

In the past, the best ways that I've found jobs have been "pounding the pavement" and networking.

One of my best jobs I got within a month of getting out there with my resume and going to potential employers in person to fill out applications, etc. In one case (a large bank) they interviewed me on the spot. The recruiter said she was impressed by the fact that I spent a bunch of days going to places in person. She set me up with the manager of a dep't that was hiring and I eventually was hired and stayed there over five years.

Networking is also a great way to find out about, and apply for available positions.

It sort of depends on the type of job you seek.

Freelancers can do anything from leaving cards and kitchen magnets to placing a magnetic sign on their care, advertising their services.

When it comes to employers, and not contract clients, walking in when you have time to complete paperwork seems best, especially if they have a position that hasn't been advertised yet. A company is often so happy to have avoided the expense of advertising that they hire you the same day!
