Temporary Jobs: A Golden Opportunity

image of the word jobsToday’s job market is very competitive. If you are searching for a new job, it’s easy to get discouraged. Whether you are a recent graduate, or a seasoned executive, work opportunities are limited. It may be time to expand your search, and consider temporary work as an option. While there are downsides, there are also some benefits that you may decide are worth it.

Most people focus on applying to full-time jobs because they provide more long-term security. However, by ignoring temporary work you might be denying yourself good opportunities. More importantly, you may be denying yourself a full-time job in the long run.

Temporary employment means that you are only hired for a certain amount of time. When you are asked to leave, you are expected to do so immediately. Sounds risky, but this is not always the way temporary assignments work out. The key to finding good temporary opportunities is learning what potential employers are looking for.

Think of yourself as a business investment. You have to be paid a salary and other benefits. Even the hiring process itself costs businesses a lot of money. Employers can’t predict how successful you will be. They don’t know if you will work well with others. You may have great credentials on paper, but so do many other candidates. This is why some employers offer temporary work before hiring someone full-time. They want to make sure you are the right fit before committing.

Some companies will set a time limit for a temporary assignment before it turns permanent. In other words, you will get a trial period. At the end of this trial period, you will either be let go or hired full-time. Since the opportunity for work is already there, work hard and you should have no problem getting hired down the road.

Sometimes the employer doesn’t specify how long a temporary assignment will last. It’s simply stated that there is an opportunity for permanent employment if you do well. This is not so bad either because you know that full-time employment is available. If you do your best, chances are you will be recruited permanently.

It might seem that employers are getting all the advantages in such situations. That is not the case. When you go on an interview, you are also interviewing the employer. It can be very hard to tell whether you will like working somewhere without actually doing it. If you end up disappointed with your new workplace, you can leave the same day without consequences.

These types of opportunities can be a great way to get your foot in the door. It is much easier to get a temporary position than a permanent one. Companies don’t feel like they are taking as much of a risk. You can use that to your advantage. Show them that you are an exceptional employee and they will not want you to leave.

Unfortunately, temporary work does not always lead to a full-time job. Some businesses offer short-term assignments for reasons other than wanting to test you. For example, an employee goes on maternity leave and they need someone to fill in until she comes back. The good thing is that you will be told if there is absolutely no opportunity for permanent employment. If you are not interested in temporary work that doesn’t have the potential of turning full-time, you can skip these types of jobs. However, it’s worth remembering that this is still a way to make money if you haven’t worked in a long time. You might also learn a few new skills that can be added to your resume.

People make the mistake of completely overlooking temporary work opportunities. However, they can lead to a full-time job with a good company. They key is learning exactly what the terms of a particular temporary assignment are, and whether they will work for you in the long run.
